How the JoSAA Seat Allotment 2026 Process Works?

The JoSAA Counselling Seat Allotment procedure is a centralised merit-based algorithm sorting seats based on a candidate’s JEE Main or JEE Advanced ranking, category, and preferences. The whole JoSAA Seat Allocation process happens in the following stages:

Stage 1: Candidate Ranking

First, JoSAA sorts all qualified candidates in order of JEE Main or JEE Advanced ranking, with the highest-ranked first. When you achieve a higher rank, you are prioritised in the seat allocation process.

Stage 2: Makeover of the Preference List

When the algorithm determines your rank, it begins to run through your list of options one by one. It checks each of your desired institutes and branches individually.

Stage 3: Check Seat Availability

Next, the algorithm determines whether a seat is available in the program of your choosing and in your category. It checks the official JoSAA seat Matrix to see if a spot is available.

Stage 4: JoSAA Seat Allotment

If a seat becomes available and is assigned to you, the algorithm will cease considering your other options for that round, and you will be ready to go. If the seat is taken, the system will check your next option.

Stage 5: Round-wise Seat Upgradation

In the following rounds, applicants who opted to Float or Slide may be upgraded to a higher preference option if a seat becomes available.

The system continues until all counselling rounds are completed.

Stage 6: Pay JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee to confirm

When you receive an assigned seat, you must accept it, pay the JoSAA Seat acceptance fee, and complete some document verification to ensure your entrance.

What is Freeze/Float/Slide in JoSAA Seat Allocation

After the JoSAA Seat Allotment Result is announced, students need to go to the counselling website and determine if they should accept the allotted seat or try to get a better one by participating in later rounds of counselling. In order to proceed further with the admission procedure, it becomes necessary that students choose one of the options below and pay the seat acceptance fee within the given time frame.

Freeze Option

\This Freeze option can be selected by those who are happy with their allotted seats and don’t want to appear in later counselling rounds. Once the Freeze option is selected by students, they will accept the seat and its institute and department automatically. This seat cannot be upgraded during later rounds.

Float Option

This option gives candidates the freedom of getting upgraded if any seat with a higher preference than allotted to them becomes vacant after considering their ranks and preferences. The current allotted seat will only be retained by the candidate if there is no other seat left for him or her.

Slide Option

When a candidate is happy with the allotted institute but seeks to get a good department from that institute, then the Slide option comes into use. If the candidate opts for Slide, he will still be eligible for the improvement of departments in future rounds.
