Admission Process at NITs Colleges in India

Admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is an organised, merit-based process that takes place at the national level. Admission to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) is dependent on the JEE Main exam results. Candidates must first pass the Joint Entrance Exam (Main), meet eligibility standards, and go through the counselling process. Furthermore, to be admitted to the courses offered by the institute, aspirants must score higher than the JEE Main cutoff for NITs.

Step 1: Appear for JEE Main

The first step of the admission process is to take the entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, i.e., the Joint Entrance Examination Main. It is the sole entrance examination required for admission into B.Tech courses offered at NITs. The examination is conducted twice a year, i.e., in the months of January and April. The percentile score and the All India Rank of the candidate play a vital role.

Step 2: Check Result & Qualify

After the entrance examination, the student has to check the result of the examination, download the scorecard, and the All India Rank. To qualify, the student must have secured at least 75% marks in class 12 or must be in the top 20th percentile of their respective boards. The student needs to meet the above criteria.

Step 3: Register for JoSAA Counselling

After qualifying the entrance examination, the student has to register themselves on the official website of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority handles the entire admission process of NITs, IITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The student has to register themselves after the declaration of the result of the entrance examination.

Step 4: Choice Filling & Locking

In this process, the student has to fill in the preferred NITs and engineering courses. It is essential to analyze the rank, previous cutoffs, and career objectives, as the choices filled here have a direct influence on the seat allotment process.

Step 5: Seat Allotment

The seat allotment process takes place through multiple rounds, depending on the JEE Main rank, category, and choices filled. Seats are allocated based on the student’s choices. Students have the option of Freeze, Float, or Slide.

 Step 6: Document Verification

After seat allocation, the student has to upload the documents, including the JEE Main scorecard, class 10th and 12th marksheets, category certificates, and valid identity proofs. The documents must be accurate, as the authenticity of the documents is verified at this stage.

Step 7: Fee Payment & Final Admission

Finally, in this last step of the admission process, the selected candidates have to pay the seat acceptance fee and join their allocated NIT according to the guidelines provided. By completing the admission formalities online or offline, the admission of the selected candidate is finally confirmed.
