How TNEA Rank is Calculated

TNEA Cutoff or the TNEA Rank is calculated based on students’ Class 12 PCM Marks. There are no separate entrance exams to qualify for TNEA counselling. The Final merit rank is prepared using a cutoff that is scaled out of 200 marks. The following TNEA Rank Calculation Formula is used:

TNEA Cutoff = Mathematics Marks + Physics Marks/2 + Chemistry/2

Mathematics marks carry 100 weightage, whereas Physics and Chemistry each carry 50 weightage, making the total marks 200. This is also known as the normalization process. It is conducted to maintain a fair and equal system across different boards, which is State Board, CBSE, ICSE, or any other board. After calculating the TNEA cutoff marks, the rank list is arranged in descending order. The higher the cutoff, the better the rank.

Previous Year’s TNEA Cutoff

Students can use the previous year’s TNEA cutoff details to predict the TNEA Cutoff 2026 using the TNEA Rank Predictor tool. Refer to the following previous year’s TNEA Cutoff in the Open Category across top colleges:

Factors Affecting TNEA Rank

Several important factors directly affect the TNEA ranks, which alter the TNEA Colleges’ cutoff and seat allotment process. Check the following factors affecting TNEA Rank:

•  Mathematics Marks: As it has the highest weightage in the TNEA Rank calculation, the maths marks make a great impact on the ranks.

•  Normalisation Process: The process which is conducted to maintain fairness affects the final cutoff score, merit position and community rank.

•  Overall number of TNEA students: the number of students applying each year impacts the rank trends.

•  Tie-Breaking Rules: When two students get the TNEA cutoff score, TNEA uses official tie-breaking criteria in priority order affecting the TNEA rank.

•  Reservation Category: Based on the reservation criteria and community guidelines, the TNEA rank list is prepared.

•  Board Exam Difficulty level: The toughness of the board exams impacts the ranks as well, which results in decreasing of the average cutoffs.
