JEE Main Result 2025: What’s Percentile Score
The percentile score in JEE Main reflects how a candidate performs compared to other test-takers in the same session. Instead of showing raw marks, the scores are converted into a scale from 0 to 100, depending on how many candidates scored equal to or lower than a particular score.
According to the official explanation, the percentile represents the percentage of candidates who scored the same or below a specific candidate. This is why the highest scorer of every session always receives a 100th percentile. All other marks between the highest and lowest scores are also converted into corresponding percentile values.
JEE Mains Percentage vs JEE Mains Percentile: What’s the difference?
Many students confuse these two terms, but they are not the same.
| Percentage | Percentile |
| Shows marks out of 100 | Shows how many candidates scored lower than you |
| Reflects the total score you obtained in the exam | Reflects your relative rank among all examinees |
| Based only on your performance | Based on your performance compared to others |
How to Calculate Your Percentile Score JEE Mains Result 2025
NTA prepares the JEE Main 2025 results through a normalisation process. Since the exam is conducted across multiple shifts and days, the difficulty level of the question paper may vary from session to session. After this process, ranks are allotted based on the percentile score, not raw marks. The percentile score is calculated using a standard formula set by the NTA:
- Total Percentile (T1P) = 100 × (No. of candidates who appeared in the session with raw score equal to or less than T1 score) / (Total number of aspirants who appeared in the session)
- Mathematics Percentile (M1P) = 100 × (No. of candidates who appeared in the session with raw score equal to or less than M1 score in Mathematics) / (Total number of aspirants who appeared in the session)
- Physics Percentile (P1P) = 100 × (No. of candidates who appeared in the session with raw score equal to or less than P1 score in Physics) / (Total number of aspirants who appeared in the session)
- Chemistry Percentile (C1P) = 100 × (No. of candidates who appeared in the session with raw score equal to or less than C1 score in Chemistry) / (Total number of aspirants who appeared in the session)
*Where:
- T1 = Total Score
- M1 = Score in Mathematics
- P1 = Score in Physics
- C1 = Score in Chemistry
