JEE Advanced Exam Pattern Overview

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination and is conducted for candidates who qualify through JEE Main. The structure and format of JEE Advanced differ significantly from JEE Main, both in terms of complexity and exam organisation.

JEE Advanced consists of two mandatory papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are held on the same day, and each is of 3 hours’ duration. Candidates must attempt both papers to be considered for ranking.

Each paper is further divided into three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The questions are designed to test a deeper understanding of concepts, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills. The question types include multiple-choice questions with single or multiple correct answers, numerical value-based questions, and matrix match type questions. The marking scheme is not uniform; it varies by question type and may include full, partial, or negative marking, which is announced in the exam instructions.

JEE Advanced is conducted in a computer-based (online) mode. Unlike JEE Main, there is no choice in the number of papers or sections: all candidates must attempt all sections in both papers.
